Free deck: Some assembly required

Okay, that took longer than anticipated. We spent the better part of the weekend and then some tearing down the deck. Hundreds of pounds (and dollars) of wood now lay in a pile. We tried to save as much as possible for the replacement deck. Unfortunately, not as much as hoped. The boys and I removed about 1,000 screws. In fact, our old drill finally quit and we had to get another one. The rest of the structure had to be cut up with a reciprocating saw. All that is left now are the concrete piers. Don't ask me how to remove those.

All of the decking we saved. It can be turned over and used again. But the majority of the frame will have to be cut down for other uses. Any ideas?

The adventure begins: Goodbye deck

Here we are at the start of July and finally we can see the beginning of construction. But before construction, demolition must take place. Last summer, we added a large deck to the back of the old house. Unfortunately, the deck is now in the way of the new design. So, less than 10 months removed from screwing down all the decking, we put the drill in reverse and began to take the deck apart.

This portion of the Fossil Forge website will illustrate the transformation going on here at Fossil Gardens. The photo above shows the shingle-clad sunroom, which was built in the early 1990s. This portion of the house is coming down. In its place will be a two-story addition that (we hope) will be a nice compliment to our 90-year-old American Foursquare home. Watch the changes in the upcoming months. Let us know what you think.
